As fans say goodbye to the original Windmill Lane Studios, which is being demolished this week to make way for new developments, U2’s first producer Steve Lillywhite, who recorded U2’s first three albums there, shared his farewell too, as told to @U2 a few days ago: Windmill Lane was an average rock studio at best, as well as a video editing company. Most other big Irish bands, like Thin Lizzy and The Boomtown Rats, moved to London to record. I was the first producer there ever to make a decent sounding rock record with Boy. I had to record Larry in the reception area because the…

If you saw a post on Facebook, or perhaps in a forum, about what U2’s stage will look like and what sort of experience to expect in the arena for this year’s Innocence + Experience tour, don’t believe it. As far as we know here at @U2, no one is sharing reliable facts just yet about what’s in store. This is NOT a design for U2’s tour stage. Earlier this week on a Facebook page, this image (without the red “X,” which I added) was posted with a link to the designer’s website. The Facebook poster claimed, This is U2’s stage setup (a PA…

In our forum last night, member “Hwy 190″ shared the photo above that shows what clearly looks like a clean saw cut to the fallen Joshua tree — i.e., the actual tree from the inner cover of U2’s album. The forum member lives in the California desert and says s/he’s been visiting the site of the tree (which fell in 2000) regularly, including a visit a few days ago. This past Sunday, I made my proverbial yearly hike out to the Tree with my dog to reminisce only to find that some hack and I do mean hack, decided it was a bright idea to take a hacksaw to one of the…

The band did come out and spend some time with the fans, signing and posing for photos. Inside the Bono even did a bit of crowd-surfing and amazed fans with a very up close and personal evening.Wednesday night we had a photo of the set list that was to be performed at the Roxy. When Ireland became the first country to legalize same-gender marriage by popular mandate, double rainbows appeared over Dublin, and an Irish rock band transformed their Arizona concert into a gay-rights celebration. Almost 30 years ago, Bono endured threats from angry Arizonans for his support of the US national holiday for the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. But on Saturday, Bono invoked King as peacemaker as U2 celebrated the victory of love, turning the song “Pride (In The Name of Love)” into an anthem for gay pride. U2 had begun expressing their strong support for #VoteYes on their…

Until Thursday, May 14, 2015 in western Canada, it’s been a decade since U2 did a predominately indoor tour, alternating as they have been between football stadiums and basketball arenas since the Joshua Tree days. While some folks speculated whether the vast shimmering audacity of the stadium-seasoned Claw could ever be rivaled, U2’s designer Willie Williams had been working behind the scenes. The Elevation tour’s “heart” has been cut in half by a cross-like stage that crosses the entire mainfloor of the venues that seem tiny compared to the grandeur of the 360-tour jaunt in…

U2’s new Songs of Innocence showed up free to all iTunes customers, creating immediate buzz as well as frustration. Neither the band nor Apple probably anticipated the way the very medium of the release would dominate many blogs and social media for several days.  Lost in much of the sound and fury of tweets and stories is the sound and fury of U2′s 13th studio album. Early on, rumors circulated of an album titled Songs of Ascent, but we ended up with Songs of Innocence. The group stepped down, ever so slightly, from comparisons with the biblical psalmist to echo instead the…

Then, yesterday, The New York Times spilled the beans, making a bold claim that they would indeed “play a role” at the event. They did. This afternoon, everyone with an iTunes account received a free copy of the new album Songs of Innocence.  In a pre-release interview, Bono referred to the album as…

Sometimes, I feel like what I do with analyzing lyrics is a special kind of witchcraft. I take Bono's awesome rhymes, mix them with a splash of newt's foot, and chant the chorus of the selected song a few times when I really should be trying to sleep. And somehow, this mystical process allows me to churn out a cool analysis column every so often.
